FAQ

Q: What is the square foot coverage of a 2 gallon kit?
A: Product Vikon 9080/9086 100% solids
At 20 Mils thick coverage is 160 square feet per kit.
At 10 Mils thick coverage is 300 square feet per kit.
Product Vikon 300CSL Spray
At 20 Mils thick coverage is 35 square feet per cartridge.
At 10 Mils thick coverage is 70 square feet per cartridge.

Q: What is the pot life of the product?
A: Product Vikon 9080/9086 100% solids
At normal room temperature (72⁰F) the pot life is 12-15 minutes depending upon humidity.
Higher humidity = shorter pot life.
Lower humidity = longer pot life.

Q: What is the recommended mil thickness for an application?
A: Vikon 9080/9086 should be applied from approximately 7 to 20 mils per coat.

Q: Does weather effect dry times?
A: Yes.
The more humid the environment, the faster the cure time.
The less humid the environment, the slower the cure time.
The higher the temperature, the faster the cure time.
The lower the temperature, the slower the cure time.
*The temperature of the product AND the substrate will also affect the “dry time”. Relative humidity of 65% is optimal.

Q: Can the pot life be manipulated?
A: Depending upon environmental conditions, heating the product (up to maximum of 90 ⁰ F) or cooling the product will change the pot life.
Increasing or decreasing the relative humidity of a building with the climate control systems will affect the pot life. Additional methods of extending the pot life will be discussed during training.

Q: How does the product perform in hot or cold temperatures?
A: Due to the high elongation properties of Vikon Coatings materials, the products hold up very well in either hot or cold conditions. Particularly, Vikon Coatings are extremely resistant to thermal shock or cracking, especially compared to other resinous coatings such as epoxy.

Q: Are there different products for different substrates?
A: Yes. Along with our standard products, Vikon has the ability to custom formulate coatings for almost any substrate other than PLASTIC.

Q: Are all products UV resistant?
A: Most of our standard products are UV resistant.
Please refer to Technical Data Sheets.

Q: Does moisture have any effect on Vikon products?
A: Yes. Vikon Coatings cure with moisture.
Product can not be applied on standing water or extremely wet concrete.
Vikon does formulate a specific coating for excessive hydrostatic pressure as well.

Q: Should the product be shaken or stirred?
A: To avoid creating air bubble, never shake the product; stir by hand or with a drill using a “Rabbit” or “Squirrel” type of mixer being sure to immerse the mixer fully into the material prior to starting the drill. Always clean your mixer thoroughly.

Q: How does the product hold up against chemicals?
A: Extremely well, please refer to the Chemical Resistance Chart.
Vikon standard coating products exhibit excellent resistance to a wide variety of chemicals. Always check specifications to ensure that your particular chemical exposure is included in technical data. In addition, Vikon offers many formulations that are formulated for specific chemical exposures.

Q: Where do I get calcium chloride tests and how do I use them?
A: Contact a local independent engineering firm for testing, for the highest degree of accuracy, core testing is recommended. Do it yourself Calcium chloride tests can be purchased relatively cheaply and sent to a local lab for results.

Q: What temperatures can Vikon be applied in?
A: Vikon coating materials may be applied from -20 ⁰F up to over 100⁰F. The higher the temperature, the lower the material viscosity, but also the pot life is reduced. If your application conditions are outside this range contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Q: Do you have to prime all floors?
A: It is recommended that all floors be primed. If your application or conditions will not permit this, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. If time sensitive, use Vikon 9086 with advanced adhesion properties.

Q: What is the time in between coats?
A: The material must gel and begin to crosslink prior to the next coat being applied. Under normal operating conditions and coating thickness, Vikon 9086 can typically be recoated in 30 to 90 minutes.

Q: What equipment should I have?
A: In addition to various supplies such as roller covers, brushes, etc. The following lists the recommended equipment to start up a 4-6 man installation crew:
Qty (1) – B&W Manufacturing DG-16-2 Floor Diamond grinder with shrouds www.bwmanufacturing.com
Qty (2) – 4.5” Metabo Hand grinders with shrouds

Total cost of startup is approximately $14-$16K

Q: Do Vikon Coatings products smell like the other resinous coatings on the market?
A: No, Vikon 100% solids products have zero VOCs and zero solvents so the odor is minimal and short lived, kind of like a new car.

Q: Are there any health concerns involved in using Vikon products?
A: Minimal, but for the brush/roll/trowel systems you should protect your skin wherever the product may come in contact. In addition, safety glasses and respirators may be used as needed.

Q: How long before the client can be back in service?
A: Depending upon the system used and the service area, anywhere from 2 hours to walk on and 24 hours for full service.

Q: How long will the floor last?
A: For a 20 Mil system in normal traffic areas expected service life is 10-12 years. In addition, if there is wearing in high traffic areas, another clear coat can be applied after many years without having to replace the entire floor.

Q: What are the benefits of your product to others?
A: Installers can finally work with the highest performing resinous coating available without the concern of odors, solvents, VOC’s and the potential health risks that come with caustic substances.

Employees in the facility reap the same benefits as well as returning to work more quickly.

The environment is not exposed to the typical solvents and VOC’s gassed off by other products.

Vikon 100% solids, zero VOC, Zero solvent coatings can provide credits for any LEED projects you are pursuing.

Q: Does the surface preparation vary with the type of substrate?
A: Yes, complete prep would include any number of the following: cleaning; degreasing; washing; mechanical abrasion; chemical abrasion; vacuuming; repairing spalls, divots, and depressions; and filling in and repairing cracks and joints. All floors will not require all of these steps.

Q: How long does it take for primer to dry?
A: Depending upon the environmental temperature and humidity the following guidelines can be used:
Vikon W-3 Primer-1 to 5 hours
Vikon 9086 advanced adhesion formula-30 to 90 minutes
Vikon Hydro Prime 30-90 minutes

Q: When moisture is visibly present can I install your flooring systems?
A: If you are a Vikon Premier Dealer, YES, since you have access to our proprietary primer systems.

Q: How long does it take to get product?
A: All orders will be shipped within 48 hours of order receipt and approval for in stock materials. For materials that are not in stock, availability and target shipping dates will be advised upon receipt and approval of order.
